River rocks are highly distinctive and can add versatility and functionality to any outdoor area. The use of river rocks in your landscaping will help keep small animals and insects away from your plantings. The ideal installation includes covering dirt and soil with pierced black plastic, or plastic netting, followed by two inches of large-sized gravel, and then a topmost layer of river rock. By using river rock you create a virtual desert that keeps pests to a minimum.

The same rock-over-plastic installation is highly recommended around and under decking to keep grass, dirt and mud off of the deck and to prevent weed and plant growth underneath. River rock in the garden can help hold water after rain, will keep weeds from growing and climbing on fencing, and are excellent for all sorts of drainage projects. For large projects such as building a rock wall, laying walkways or stairways, or pouring pads for patios, river rock can be mixed with mortar and utilized.
